Marilyn Howshall Helps Parents Discover How to Make God Real to Their Children Through HeartLevel Discipleship

POST FALLS, Idaho, USA — Sept. 10, 2026 — For many Christian parents, one of the deepest hopes is to see their children develop a faith that is truly their own to know God personally, walk with Him daily, and choose to follow Jesus throughout their lives.

But how does a parent move beyond simply teaching children about God and help them experience Him as real?

Marilyn Howshall explores that question in her book, Making God Real to Your Children: Imprinting the Process of Heart-Level Growth Toward Salvation. Drawing from Scripture, practical instruction, and lessons from her own family journey, Howshall offers parents a relational approach to discipleship that begins not with a parenting formula, but with the heart of the parent.

Rooted in Deuteronomy 6:6–7, the book encourages parents to recognize that discipleship does not have to happen only during formal Bible lessons or family devotions. Ordinary life can become the place where faith takes root through conversations, relationships, decisions, challenges, and the everyday moments parents share with their children.

At the center of Howshall’s message is a simple but powerful idea: it starts with me.

Parents may spend years trying to find the right techniques, rules, or strategies for raising their children, yet Howshall believes there is a deeper place to begin. Before parents can effectively influence the hearts of their children, they must allow God to work in their own hearts.

God wants to parent the parent, too.

Howshall explains that parents were never intended to disciple their children solely through their own wisdom and strength. As they learn to follow God and allow Him to shape their own lives, they become better equipped to guide their children toward a genuine relationship with Him.

The book introduces practical ways parents can help their children understand their conscience and develop what Howshall describes as heart-level self-government. These principles are designed to help children learn how to make wise choices, love God and others, and respond to Christ’s leadership as they grow.

Rather than presenting another list of parenting techniques, Howshall describes her approach as an invitation to a different way of living as a family. Her goal is to help parents build the kind of heart-level influence that can shape not only behavior, but character, relationships, and faith.

Howshall’s message comes from more than three decades of working with families. She and her husband, Jim, co-founded Lifestyle of Learning™ Ministries in 1990 and have served the homeschool community for more than 30 years. She has authored several books and spent 15 years traveling across the country, sharing the Lifestyle of Learning™ message through conferences and state homeschool conventions.

Following a significant health crisis, Howshall’s work developed an even stronger focus on family relationships and the Gospel of Reconciliation. Today, as an ordained minister, she continues helping families pursue stronger relationships and a lifestyle centered on learning, faith, and personal growth.

For Howshall, the message is personal. She says that God gave her practical understanding of how He was working in her own heart and life. As she experienced God parenting her, she learned to bring those lessons into the way she parented her own children. Now, she hopes to help other parents discover that same process for themselves.

Living in northern Idaho with Jim, surrounded by their extended family and seven grandsons, Howshall continues to experience family life not simply as a subject to teach, but as something to live every day.

Through Making God Real to Your Children, Howshall invites parents to look at discipleship differently. The goal isn’t simply to raise children who know the right answers. It is to help them grow from the heart to know their conscience, develop self-government, understand God’s ways, and ultimately develop a faith that is real and personal.

And for parents wondering where that journey should begin, Howshall’s answer is clear: start with your own heart.
