At 21, Nigerian Author Doreen Otaru Gives the Uncertainty of Growing Up a Voice in Debut Novel Seasons of Blooming

Blending contemporary coming-of-age fiction with subtle magical realism, the University of Texas at Austin student examines dislocation, the quiet grief of friendship breakups, and the fragile weight of second chances.

Los Angeles, CA, USA – October 16, 2026 – Most coming-of-age stories are written from the comfortable vantage point of retrospection, looking back on youth after the storm has passed. Nigerian author and creative strategist Doreen Otaru chose a different route. Published on May 30, 2026, her debut novel, Seasons of Blooming, was written directly from the middle of the transition. At twenty-one, while completing her studies at the University of Texas at Austin, Otaru crafted a narrative that takes the private upheavals of early adulthood seriously; examining what happens when the identities young people build for themselves fall apart before they even fully form.

Set against the stark contrast between New York and suburban Texas, Seasons of Blooming follows eighteen-year-old Solehn. In New York, Solehn’s life was carefully assembled: high social standing, tight-knit friendships, and a defined path toward the future. When sudden family instability uproots her during the final semester of her senior year, she finds herself displaced to an affluent suburb outside Austin, Texas. Faced with the quiet shock of starting over, Solehn does what many young people do when cornered by circumstance: she reconstructs herself as someone harder, sharper, and less vulnerable.

As Solehn drifts through unfamiliar hallways, rooftop gatherings, and the ache of sudden isolation, she encounters Alexander, the reserved boy next door who refuses to accept her newly constructed armor. Their relationship gradually complicates her notions of intimacy, forgiveness, and pride. When an unexpected tragedy shatters her fragile equilibrium, a mysterious yellow umbrella introduces an element of magical realism, presenting an impossible second chance and posing the central dilemma of the book: If we could change the past, would we know how to make the future better?

“When I was younger, I thought growing up meant eventually becoming someone who had all the answers,” said Otaru. “At eighteen, I thought that person would appear in college. Now, at twenty-one, I realize I am still waiting for her. I wrote Seasons of Blooming because I wanted to explore what happens when life refuses to become what we imagined. Solehn is not always kind, and she does not always make the right decisions. But she is eighteen, and I think we sometimes forget how much we expect young people to understand about a world they have barely experienced. I wanted to write a story that allowed her to be wrong, to be frightened, to love imperfectly, and still be worthy of understanding.”

A Resonant Reception Among Readers

Since its late-spring debut, Seasons of Blooming has garnered sustained emotional engagement from readers. Throughout September and October 2026, early reviews and reader discussions have noted the novel’s candid portrayal of friendship dissolutions and the emotional cost of self-reinvention.

Readers have widely noted the book’s emotional staying power. One reviewer highlighted the story’s lingering impact, sharing, “The ending had me crying, and even after finishing, I couldn’t stop thinking about the story.” Another reader remarked on the authentic texture of the protagonist’s journey, describing the book as “a messy, yet tender look at the final stretch of high school.” For Otaru, these reactions reflect a shared longing for fiction that resists easy moralizing.

“One of the most meaningful parts of publishing this book has been reading messages from people who recognize themselves in Solehn, even when they disagree with her,” Otaru noted. “I never wanted to write a character who was easy to admire. I wanted to write someone readers could be frustrated with one moment and understand the next. Seeing people connect with her grief, her friendships, and her fear of growing up has reminded me why I wanted to write in the first place. Sometimes, knowing that someone else has felt what you are feeling is enough to make the world seem a little less lonely.”

Honoring an Early Dream

Otaru’s path to publication is intertwined with her broader professional ambitions. Currently pursuing a career in the entertainment industry across Austin and Los Angeles, her work focuses on film and television production, marketing, and talent representation. Her long-term goal is to become an agent whose work is helping other people make their dreams come true.

Publishing Seasons of Blooming is how Otaru chose to close her childhood chapter. She wrote the book to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a published author, so she could let it go and give her full attention to her new dream as an adult. If her career will be about making other people’s dreams come true, she decided the first person on that list would be her younger self.

“Before I ever understood how the entertainment industry worked or how much being an agent was something I needed to do, I wanted to be a writer,” said Otaru. “Somewhere along the way from being a kid to being an adult, my dreams expanded and changed. I began imagining a career helping other people tell their stories. But I kept thinking about the little girl who wanted to tell her own. Publishing this book was my way of keeping a promise to her. If my work is going to be about making other people’s dreams come true, the first person on that list had to be her. I hope that when someone reads Seasons of Blooming, they remember that becoming someone new does not mean abandoning everyone they used to be.”
